What is the Experience?

My heart pounds, the adrenalin starts to rise as I hear the familiar sound of rushing white water. My eyes scan for the best lines as my paddle sinks deep.This sensation is great and you can do it too. Learn to white water kayak with qualified instructors. No experience needed.

This is a comprehensive course designed to cover the skills required to become a technically correct paddler. The course is arranged in a progressive manner to allow you to develop the techniques and your confidence at an enjoyable pace with great end results. At the end you will be given the opportunity to join a club so you can further your skills in a safe environment and enjoy New Zealand's beautiful white water rivers.

Friday - 6.45pm

You will meet your instructor and be given a briefing on the weekends activity. Here you will take the first steps that will open up a life time of thrills and adventure. This evening you will be given instruction on the easy ways of entering and exiting a kayak along with water confidence and the methods of self and group rescues all in the warm waters of an inside pool.

Saturday - 8.30am

Meeting us at the store, you can jump in one of our vans for a five minute travel to the beautiful lake Rotomanu where we will work on correct paddle techniques, boat control and group and individual rescues. After which a yummy lunch will be waiting for you back at the store. After lunch we paddle on the lower part of the Waitara river (15mins away) to give you an introduction to moving water, eddies and currents and to familiarize you with the river for Sunday. Return to the store at 4pm.

Sunday - 8.30am

We again meet at the store for a final day of thrill and adventure. Today you will paddle a grade two section of the Waitara River developing moving water skills and safety techniques on moving water. The focus of the day is gradual progression allowing skills and confidence to grow. Finish about 3pm.

New Plymouth.

Session Length

Courses run once a month in winter and fortnightly in summer. Subject to demand. Allow approx 1.5-2 hours for Friday session 6.45-8.30pm in the pool (arrive 6.30 , 8.30am-4pm on Saturday & 8.30am - 3.pm Sunday. Arrive early Friday to give yourself time to change.

Guidelines:

This experience is for 13 years and above. You do not need to be able to swim but must be confident enough to be fully submerged in water.

Numbers:

Minimum number on course is 2 maximum is 5 per instructor. If we will have more than 5 however we will put on another instructor.

Weather:

The course will be postponed only under extreme weather conditions or if the rivers are in flood. Please call at the store if in any doubt.

Other Info:

You will need to sign a waiver form on arrival. Let the staff at the Aquatic Centre know you are on the course and they will let you enter free of charge.
